Tombstone

about

As the survivors saw the dead flood the streets, cemeteries became a somewhat peaceful place. Where life once thrived and was separated from death, those places were now consumed by death. Yet, where death used to dwell now seemed sparse and empty. The tombstones reminded them of a time before everything happened a time where death was not understood, yet understood enough that people allowed themselves to not think about it daily. Now it was at their doorstep, their walls, their shelters. It was everywhere. The tombstone used to stand as a reminder to their finite time, now they yearned for what they used to represent.

Tombstones are always spooky in an intriguing sort of way. I remember a preacher giving a sermon at one of my family members funerals and he went on to talk about the dash between the dates, I don’t remember the sermon so much as the crux idea of it. How everything we did... what was left of it beside the legacy and memory of the living, was summed up to outsiders who don’t know the deceased by a tiny line between two dates. That line was love and passion, pain and suffering, hate and forgiveness. Maybe it wasn’t all of them and only some, maybe it was only one of them... we can never know because it’s just a line on an old crumbling stone, someone we’ve never met and never knew what they did. What’s the guy think who carves that line? Maybe they’re all made by machines now, I dunno. Cairns and tombstones stand as a memorial of what was but moreso a sort of warning... an ever looming symbol almost like its saying, “one day this will be you, I will mark your existence” makes me think of that line between the dates, much like bearing fruit... what do we do with that line?
